The Gnome coffers should not have been greatly depleted in securing the story about Crispin Odey and his political donations.

The material (and a bit more) has been available, via Malcolm Redfellow's websites, this last trimester:
What your present story omits is that Odey was triple-tonguing it: as well as George Hargreaves' vanity project, Odey also gave Declan Ganley's Libertas £16K. In the closing days of campaigning on the Lisbon Referendum, Brian Lenihan, the Fianna Fail Minister for Finance, made a fuss. Ganley claimed the money had been used in Britain. That means either Odey and Ganley were in breach of Irish electoral law, or Odey, a "Co-Treasurer" of the Tory Party, was contributing to *three* UK party campaigns.
